Our approach: Explanation of terms

Counselling has three main components: Theory, Skills and Self Reflection. There are many different theoretical approaches. Here, we give a brief explanation of those we use at Cherry Hill Counselling.
Brief Psychoanalytic Therapy explores how your past experiences influence the present and the future. This approach regards your developing relationship with the therapist as a kind of model which may reveal the patterns of behavior that cause problems in your life.
Systemic Therapy looks at how we each relate to other people, and how we relate differently to different people. It also explores the network of significant relationships within which people are involved.
Integrative Therapy uses a range of counselling techniques. The techniques used will depend on the issues that each individual client brings to therapy, and do not belong to any one particular school or approach in the counselling field. Integrative Therapy is a holistic approach, regarding and respecting the person as a whole and not just addressing one particular problem. Its key aspects are to support a client, assist with their learning about themselves, and to set goals for positive actions.
Time Limited/Solution Focused Therapy this is short term work which will focus upon one core issue where you work towards solving your problems with coping strategies which are discussed with you in the therapy room.
Will it help?
How we can help will depend on each individual. Counselling offers the chance to talk in a non-judgmental environment. Many counselling approaches regard your developing relationship with the therapist as a kind of model which can reveal the patterns of behaviour that cause problems in your life. Others look at your family relationships, and power balances in the home as you were growing up. Others focus on your thinking style and changes in behaviour.
